| From December 12th to 20th, the HOA Cultural Society and Revista Bravo! bring to São Paulo audiences the first edition of the International Cinema Club, featuring the program IMOVISION em Cartaz - STILL I RISE. The event celebrates independent international cinema through a curated selection by HOA and Bravo!, in partnership with the Franco-Brazilian distributor IMOVISION. The title "Still I Rise" was inspired by the poem of the same name by Maya Angelou, one of the most important literary and activist voices in the United States. The poem, a manifesto of strength and resilience, echoes the power of rising above adversity, affirming the dignity and identity of individuals and communities historically marginalized. This spirit of resistance and celebration of diversity is present in every aspect of the event's curation. Sponsored by Heineken, the program features 15 films that explore impactful and plural narratives. These works highlight issues of race, gender, sexuality, and cultural resistance, reaffirming cinema's power as a tool for transformation and inclusion. From award-winning titles to innovative works, each film was selected for its artistic relevance and social impact. Highlights include "I Am Not Your Negro" (Raoul Peck), a visual manifesto on the racial struggle in the U.S.; "Climax" (Gaspar Noé), a visceral thriller from French cinema; and "Dilili in Paris" (Michel Ocelot), a charming animated film for the entire family. Brazilian cinema is also represented with films such as "Regra 34" (Julia Murat), which explores the boundaries of desire and freedom, and "Ballroom Love" (Claudia Priscilla), a vibrant portrayal of the LGBTQIAPN+ ballroom scene in Brazil. The cineclub also promotes intercultural dialogue with titles that have earned acclaim at major festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and the Oscars. Films like "Timbuktu" (Abderrahmane Sissako) and "Shoplifters" (Hirokazu Koreeda) address universal themes of resistance and affection, while francophone films like "Varda by Agnès" and "Saint Laurent" reaffirm the ties between HOA and Francophone culture, consolidating the institution's commitment to cultural exchange. Beyond offering films, the curation provokes, broadens perspectives, and builds bridges between cultures, realities, and imaginaries. IMOVISION em Cartaz is a celebration of the power of cinema, an opportunity for the public to explore diverse perspectives and immerse themselves in narratives that resonate with the present and inspire the future. The bar operation during the sessions will be charitable, with all proceeds directed to the maintenance of HOA's activities, reinforcing our role as a hub for fostering the arts. Admission is entirely free, reaffirming HOA's commitment to democratic access to culture. |
